Tower of Babel.
Not only is this a great song by Los Tres, it is also a great Bible story that I have thought a lot about. Which makes it interesting that my profe decided to have us read it and write kind of a journal entry on what we think about it. Here's what I wrote:
The story of the tower of Babel was a difficult one for me as a language major. I used to question whether or not it was pleasing to God that I was trying to learn another language and bridge the gap between my culture and theirs. God confused the languages; who am I to try to unscramble this one? But as I studied this story more, I realized something in verse four. It says, “Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the earth.’” Their purpose in uniting and building a tower was self-serving. God scrambled the languages to slow them down because he saw that, “...as one people speaking the same language...nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.” What is my purpose in learning Spanish? It is to understand other people so that I can relate to them and show them God’s love in a way they understand it and also to admire the big-ness of my Creator. God gave me this love of Spanish. Therefore, as long as I am serving Him with this love and not using it to glorify myself, I do not think it is inappropriate to unscramble this foreign tongue. Anything can be turned to sin when it is used for a purpose other than glorifying God. This is exactly what the people in that day had done with language. God’s loving punishment of the people in confusing their languages was meant to protect them from themselves.
