we live and we learn

I've been Mrs. Miller for almost a whole month now!! Time flies when you're having fun! I think I can speak for both of us when I say we're thoroughly enjoying married life. We are definitely having some adventures and learning how to live together and be responsible for a home. I thought I'd share some fun anecdotes and lessons we've been learning.

  • When shopping to stock up your barren kitchen, don't forget the baking powder and baking soda. Flour, sugar, oil, and eggs are not enough for baking cookies, pancakes, etc. etc. They even put the word "BAKING" in the name of these ingredients as an extra reminder. We will not forget again. Also, garlic and onion salt do not come in spice racks.

  • I spent the day Monday cleaning, unpacking, and arranging the study room. After opening lots of boxes we had half a room full of cardboard to recycle. I ran out of steam and decided not to bundle it up in 2' by 2' stacks like the trash company requested because I thought we had til Thursday to get it out to the curb. Turns out the trash goes on Tuesdays. Darn it.

  • On Monday evening a breaker blew in the upstairs part of the house. This crazy house has three panels of switches all in different rooms and all unlabeled. In trying to fix the problem quickly so the little girls upstairs could get to sleep, we managed to lose track of which switches had been on and which were supposed to stay off. We finally found the right one and, feeling quite competent, started heading to bed when we smelled an odd smell. It didn't quite smell electrical, but it did smell hot. It turned out that the electrical baseboard heaters in our part of the house had not yet been hooked up to a thermostat. Therefore the power to them had been off to keep them from continually running. Unfortunately they were now stuck on and we had no idea which switch controlled them. Fortunately our landlord did know and was able to instruct us over the phone. We went to bed not feeling quite so competent.

  • When fixing up your second vehicle has not been the top priority, you have to share one by dropping each other off at school or work where you may be stranded for an extra 4 hours. Fixing up the motor scooter is now a priority; the parts are in the mail.

  • When you can't decide between two different meals to make for dinner, you should probably flip a coin and get one started before the hungry man gets home from work. Except that my hungry man is so nice and patient that it actually pays to wait because then he helps you decide AND helps you make it faster in a pressure cooker.

  • Pressure cookers are too annoying to use for only cooking 4 potatoes. Think ahead and use the stove. Or buy a microwave...
