I can tell things are growing outside because my car is constantly covered in green dust and my sinuses will not dry out! Spring used to be my favorite. I can't remember why.
My awesome sister Sara has the best job she's ever had. For me, anyway. It seems every week she's bringing me some treat or another from work - pansies, a lettuce planter, Gerber daisies, herbs and veggies...
It's awesome. But it's highlighted a weak-point for me: Growing things. I am not the best grower. Mostly it's the watering - I rarely find that happy place rumored to exist between parched and drowning. But it's also the sunlight - living in a basement apartment leaves us with 2 windowsills and 1 tiny patch of dirt that get anything close to full sun. And then it's also the dirt and pot size. It's a hassle to go buy good dirt and bigger pots for my plants as they grow. So mostly I'm just lazy. Don't worry, Sara. Aside from half the pansies, I don't think I've killed anything else...yet.
My small girl, on the other hand is doing a great job of growing! It helps that she remembers to water herself.
However, as she grows and learns more, she finds more to be frustrated about. The other day, she took her toy cup and tried to fill it with water from the faucet. The faucet of her play kitchen. If only I could have captured that confused, defeated look and that wail of injustice! She has also become increasingly frustrated upon finding out that her mouth is not big enough to fit all the food she wants to eat at one time. I can relate.
My tiny girl (or boy) is probably doing a great job of growing. I might know if I went to the recommended prenatal appointments and got my first ultrasound already. But since I'm lazy and stubborn, I decided to go it alone and wait until I need a doc. It seemed reasonable at the time but I was kicking myself for it this afternoon after having to pay the extra high co-pay at the urgent care place.
There I was looking up bladder infections on that evil webmd site. You know, the one that always ends up telling you you're going to be hospitalized or die whether you have the common cold or yellow fever. If you've read about my last hostage situation in the hospital, you'll understand why I wanted to avoid a hospital trip at all costs. Even the extra high co-pay costs. Of course my family doctor never has any same day - or same week - sick appointments left so urgent care was my only option. And of course the test came back clear and I felt dumb for letting webmd and our messed up health care system win again.
If I had been going to my prenatal appointments, they would have been screening for that all along and reminding me that I need to stay hydrated even if it means 8 trips to the bathroom a day (more like each morning!).
So I made an appointment for next week. We'll see how he (or she) is really growing.
