on gum and distrust

Wasn't it nice when our kids were infants who trusted us completely?

They knew we'd feed them and hold them and they didn't want much more than that. They knew they couldn't get food on their own and they didn't feel safe without us close by (okay, that part was a bit of a problem at night when we wanted to be sleeping, but still.)

Now my first baby is going to be five and she couldn't be more skeptical of me.

She hid her last two pieces of gum in a wrapper outside under the patio table so that she could have it whenever she wanted because she was sure I wouldn't let her have it. This after a month of letting her eat her gum--all 8 packs of it--pretty much at her discretion because she bought it with their own money or received it as a gift. We're taking a break from gum in January.
