My Parents-in-law make family calendars for us every year. 2019 had a new feature: a Bible verse for every month. I'd been wanting to help my children memorize verses, and this seemed like a good way to pick them. I've been so blessed by the way each verse has applied to what we're going through in that month so I thought I'd share them so far.
January: It is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose (Philippians 2:13). We became chairs of the deacon board at church. This verse reminded us that we can neither muster enough of our own strength to do His purposes nor boast that our works are our own doing.
February: The wind blows wherever it pleases... So it is with people born of the Spirit (John 3:8). We let the wind blow us to TX for a work trip and Morocco for a family visit/vacation.
March: Be sympathetic, love as brothers and sisters, be compassionate and humble (1 Peter 3:8b). We signed up to host a family who had been separated during the asylum-seeking process.
April: I can do everything through him who gives me strength (Philippians 4:13). We began hosting said family. Also dealt with some crisis needs in the church.
May: You will call upon me, and I will answer you; ...be with you in trouble, ...deliver you and honor you (Psalm 91:15). This was our prayer for the man we were hosting who was still waiting to be reunited with the rest of his family.
June: I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you (Genesis 12:2a). The family we were hosting was finally reunited and we shared with our families that we are expecting a 4th child.
July: It is by grace you have been saved, through faith...it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8). A great reminder as our church held VBS this month and wrapped up a summer of sharing stories of faith during Sunday school; salvation is God's gift of grace to us.
August: The plans I have for you are...to prosper you and not to harm you, ...to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). This verse is supposed to be comforting but it always makes me nervous because if you have to tell me the plans are good, then clearly they are looking quite bad to me! Not sure what this month has in store yet, but our anniversary is this month and looking back over our 7 years together, I see a whole lot of good plans He's had for us. However, I am aware that not everyone can look at their lives and say that; and yet it is true. Lord, have mercy.
I haven't flipped forward to see what the rest of the year has in store, but I'm excited to keep meditating on a verse each month and see how God highlights it's immediate application in our lives.
